Football Eddie Nketiah Reveals How Didier Drogba and Michael Essien Inspired His Football Journey

Crystal Palace striker Eddie Nketiah has opened up about the football idols who shaped his career, naming Didier Drogba and Michael Essien as key influences during his formative years.

The England-born forward, who spent time in Chelsea’s academy, recalled how watching these African legends left a lasting impression on him.

“There were loads! Growing up and being in Chelsea Academy, Michael Essien was a Ghanaian player at the time, but a big one would probably be Didier Drogba,” Nketiah revealed.

For Nketiah, Drogba’s passion, joy, and leadership on the pitch stood out the most, influencing the way he approaches the game today.

“He’s such an iconic striker who really left his footprint with Chelsea and in the Premier League. The joy he played football with, the smile he used to have on his face, the way he used to celebrate dancing with teammates—that left a real impression on me,” he added.

The Crystal Palace forward, known for his energetic style and goal-scoring ability, admits that Drogba’s celebrations also played a role in shaping his own approach to the game.

“That’s why I always try to celebrate my goals whenever I score and just have that joy in football because that’s why we play—to be able to smile and enjoy our work that we are blessed to be able to do every day.”

With his footballing roots connected to both Ghana and England, Nketiah continues to carve his own path in the game, drawing inspiration from the legends who paved the way before him.
