Congolese football has been rocked by a major crisis following the heavy sanction imposed on Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas. The president of the FECOFOOT has reportedly been suspended from all football-related activities by FIFA’s Ethics Committee, with immediate effect.
This decision comes after serious allegations concerning the financial management of the federation, marking a turning point for football governance in Congo-Brazzaville.
At the center of the case are accusations of embezzlement involving an estimated $1.1 million. These funds, initially allocated by FIFA for the development of women’s football and the construction of a national training center, were allegedly diverted. Investigators claim the money was misused through schemes involving money laundering and document forgery, raising concerns about systemic issues within the federation’s administration.
The consequences appear severe, as reports indicate that the case has led to heavy judicial sanctions, including a life sentence for Mayolas, alongside members of his family and other officials. FIFA has also launched disciplinary proceedings against those involved, while an international arrest warrant has reportedly been issued. If fully confirmed, this scandal could trigger a deep restructuring of football institutions in Congo, as authorities seek to restore credibility and transparency.
