Nigeria Premier League NPFL: IMC Optimistic Super 6 Will Hold This Month Despite Pending Games

The final games of the 2023 abridged league and the Super 6 will take place in May, according to the Interim Management Committee (IMC), despite the impending deadline.

In a conversation with BSN Sports on Monday, IMC’s Chief Operating Officer, Prince Davidson Owumi, revealed this.

He recognized that Rivers United’s three unfinished matches might influence their intended schedule, but he was optimistic that the league could still be finished in May.

“It is our joy for Nigeria teams to progress in the CAF Club competitions and we are very happy that Rivers United went this far to the quarterfinal which led to having three outstanding matches.

He continued, “We will work on getting them a very conducive atmosphere not to pile up too much matches on them.

“We have two groups and these two groups are not in anyway related in their fixtures.

” The delay for Rivers United to play the outstanding matches to meet up with other teams will only affect the group where Rivers United plays but not the other.

He added, “What I am saying is that, one group may complete their group matches before the other but all league matches including Super 6 will hold in May according to our calendar.”

Last weekend saw the conclusion of Week 16 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), with most clubs having just two games left to play, with the exception of Rivers United, who have three games left to play.

The Federation Cup, in which Rivers United and other NPFL teams compete, will also take place in May.

The top three clubs from each of the two groups will advance to the Super Six, where the 2022–23 NPFL champion will be crowned.

The competition will follow a league style, with the winning team taking home the trophy.

The team that finished third will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup, while the overall winners and second-placed team will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League the following year.
