African players abroad Victor Boniface Nominated for UEFA Europa League award

Nigeria international Victor Boniface is in the running for the UEFA Europa League Goal of the Group Stage award.

The 22-year-old Super Eagle was nominated for his superb strike in Bayer Leverkusen’s 5-1 home win against Qarabag. West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta, Olympic Marseille’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Magnus Wolff Elkrem, Thanjis Dallinga of Toulouse, and Villarreal’s Santi Comesana are also nominated for the award.

The other nominees are, AEK Athens’ Djibril Sidibe, Rennes duo, Lorenz Assignons and Ludovic Blas. Boniface is currently on form for Bayer 04 and he scored and assisted in their last Bundesliga fixture which they won 3-0 against Eintracht Frankfurt.

So far, the attacker has netted nine Bundesliga goals this campaign, which is tied for the fourth-highest tally in the competition in 2023-24, whilst he also ranks joint first for Bundesliga assists this campaign having created seven goals for his team-mates. He has been shown a yellow card twice.

It was against Borussia M’gladbach that Boniface scored for the first time in the league this season in a 3-0 victory on August 26, when he netted twice. In last season’s First Division A, Boniface featured in 37 games for Union Saint-Gilloise, scored nine goals, and provided eight assists.

Boniface moved to Bayer Leverkusen in July 2023 from Union Saint-Gilloise, for whom he made 37 league appearances in total, scoring nine goals and providing eight assists.
