Kenya Day of reckoning as Shabana, Sofapaka, Muhoroni fight against relegation

The day of reckoning is here! After 33 rounds of matches in the FKF Premier League, the final round of the fixtures will have a significant role as the curtains finally come down on a grueling 2023-24 campaign on Sunday.

While champion Gor Mahia will be awaiting coronation having wrapped up a record 21st title with three matches to spare, all eyes will be on the relegation zone where Shabana, Sofapaka, and Muhoroni Youth will be keen to avoid joining Nzoia Sugar to the lower division.

This is what is happening at the bottom of the 18-team table. Nzoia Sugar were the first to be relegated with three matches to spare leaving the Muhoroni, Sofapaka, and Shabana fighting for their lifes.

As it stands, Shabana’s two wins in a row – 4-3 against AFC Leopards and 3-0 against Bidco United – have given them the upper hand as the fate now lies in their hands heading into the final fixture against Muranga’s Seal at SportPesa Arena.

In short, Tore Bobe, who are lying 15th on the log with 35 points, will not need a favour from anyone. A win against fellow promoters Murang’a will ensure they move to 38, while their closest relegation rivals Sofapaka, can reach 36 points if they beat Nzoia Sugar.

However, should Shabana lose and Sofapaka win, the advantage will swing back to Batoto ba Mungu as they will move above them to stay at 36 points, leaving Tore Bobe in the relegation playoff position (16). A draw for Shabana and a win for Sofapaka will see both teams tied on 36 points and thus goal difference will be used to decide, who stays up.

Meanwhile, after hammering Nzoia Sugar 6-0 on Wednesday, Muhoroni are not giving up on their fight to stay in the league. All they need is to beat Posta Rangers at Muhoroni Stadium and pray that Sofapaka loses against Nzoia to stand a chance.
