Before the game, Wydad coach Walid Regragui said that Ahly, the record African Champions League winners with 10 titles under their belt, are the “African Real Madrid.” But he had a change of heart following Monday’s victory in Casablanca.

Today, we were Real Madrid, not Liverpool. We learned the lesson from Real Madrid’s win.” He told beIN Sports in a pitch-side interview.

Regragui was referring to Liverpool’s domination as the Reds were hit on the break, with Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior scoring from a rare foray forward.

Ahly had the better possession for most of the game. But the Egyptian giants struggled for openings, only creating a couple of threats in the last 10 minutes.

We let them have the ball. And we knew that they would send balls upfield to (South African forward) Percy Tau. So we focused on controlling him.” Regragui added.

The game was very tough. But we produced a strong performance and deserved to win.”

Wydad won their first two title, in 1992 and 2017, with the latter triumph also coming at the expense of Ahly.

Ahly missed out on what would have been an unprecedented hat-trick of straight Champions League crowns.
