AFCON Afcon 2023: South Africa dominated Morocco and deserved victory – Broos

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos believes his charges dominated Morocco and deserved their 2-1 victory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

An own goal from goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi after a clever effort from Percy Tau put Bafana Bafana ahead in the fourth minute and it was 2-0 in the 48th minute when Zakhele Lepasa found the back of the net. Though Morocco pulled a goal back via Hakim Ziyach in the 60th minute, it was not enough as Bafana held on to revenge their 2-1 first-round defeat against the Atlas Lions in Rabat.

“I am very happy today [Saturday]. Not only because we won, but I think we deserved to win the game with the chances we had. I am more happy about the performance. As I said before the game, the result is not important – but to see the progression we made in the last months,” Broos told the media after the game as quoted by CafOnline.

“We played against a very good team, and we were never dominated. On the contrary, we sometimes dominated the team, we had three or four good chances to score, and I only remember one or two for them.”

On the progress South Africa have made ahead of the Afcon in Ivory Coast, the Belgian tactician said: “You don’t build a team in one day. You need time and today [Saturday] you see a team that plays good football and creates chances which is what we want.

“We still have to improve and that’s for sure. If we can do that, we can do well in the Afcon.”

The win enabled Bafana to move top of the group with seven points, the Atlas Lions are second with six, Liberia third on one, and Zimbabwe are last with no points.
