Kenya Nyamweya can resuscitate Kenyan football, youths claim

A section of youths in the country are drumming up support for the return of Sam Nyamweya to help resuscitate dwindling fortunes of Kenyan football.

In a statement signed by Douglas Ogari, and Robert Maeri on behalf of the agitated fans, the youths believe the return of Nyamweya, will be resourceful not only for building the ailing football industry but also to contribute to the country’s big four agenda.

“To start with, Nyamweya is a man wearing very many hats: a responsible family man who is very passionate about football and soccer not only in this nation but also in the world having held many leadership positions that saw FKF crumbling after he left the scene on February 10, 2016, a position that is now held by an incompetent Nick Mwendwa who is seen in clubs with utmost little to showcase in matters football,” read part of the statement.

“During his tenure, he reduced the friction between the leagues and the federation following FKF’s signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Kenyan Premier League to provide the framework within which to operate.”

The statement added: “Nyamweya restructured operations to enable the federation to deliver on its mandate to manage the game; in addition, he reformed the league System to ensure the game could be played meaningfully at all levels. He succeeded to endeavour and have a transformative national secretariat and a league System of seven tiers with the ward league as the lowest level. We saw the top two divisions having broadcast sponsors, a milestone never achieved before.”

The strong statement was issued just a day after Kenya lost to minnows Mauritius 1-0 in a Four-Nation tournament held in the Island nation. During the competition, Kenya finished with three points having defeated Pakistan 1-0 but what irked fans is the fact they lost to Mauritius, who are ranked 180 by Fifa, 78 places below Kenya.
