Friendly Colombia stun Germany for the first time to pile pressure on Flick

Germany suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Colombia in a friendly on Tuesday in their latest setback which mounted pressure on manager Hansi Flick less than a year before they host Euro 2024.

In the fixture at Veltins-Arena, Luis Diaz scored Colombia’s opener in the 54th minute and Juan Cuadrado gave the guests a second from the spot in the 82nd after Joshua Kimmich, who had come from the bench into the game just three minutes earlier, hit the ball with his arm.

Germany have now played three friendly games in June and their best result was a 3-3 draw with Ukraine, but that was followed by a 1-0 defeat to Poland last week. Flick kept his job after the group stage exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but is now under pressure after only winning four of the last 16 games and ahead of the Euro 2024.

Colombia’s win was it’s first ever over Germany, a four-time world champion that appears to have forgotten how to win games. They went ahead after 54 minutes when Cuadrado whipped in a perfect cross for Díaz to head past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Flick then sent Kimmich on for the last 15 minutes and the Bayern Munich midfielder promptly conceded a penalty for handball which Cuadrado made no mistake sending ter Stegen the wrong way.

Germany will next face Japan in another friendly on September 9 at Volkswagen Arena.
