Kenyan Premier League Mathare United relegated as FKF title race goes to the wire

Mathare United have been relegated from the FKF Premier League following their 1-1 draw against Ulinzi Stars at Kasarani Annex on Wednesday.

Wazito FC’s 1-0 win over Bidco United in Thika now means they will be in the promotion playoff. The Slum Boys, who had survived relegation by a whisker for five seasons running, have finally been relegated, shattering the hopes and dreams of many.

The draw left the Slum Boys second last on 23 points, six points behind Wazito who will now play the third-ranked team from the 2022-2023 NSL. Mathare, who were saved from relegation last year in November when the reinstated FKF management declared the 2021-2022 season null and void, have themselves to blame for the axe.

Meanwhile, the league champion will have to wait until the final match day, on Sunday, June 25, to be crowned. Gor Mahia suffered a 3-2 defeat against a hard-fighting Kakamega Homeboyz at Kasarani, maintaining their position at the top of the league with 67 points.

However, Tusker’s 1-1 draw against Posta Rangers leaves the Brewers just one point behind Gor Mahia, creating a nail-biting finish to the season. While Gor Mahia and Tusker battle it out for the top spot, Nzoia Sugar’s hopes of clinching the championship have been dashed after a 2-0 defeat by KCB at the Sudi Stadium.
