Kenyan Premier League Gor Mahia pip Tusker to FKF title on final day of drama

Gor Mahia were crowned FKF Premier League champions on the final day of action after coming from a goal down to defeat Nairobi City Stars 4-1 at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.

Despite Tusker winning their fixture 4-0 against relegated Vihiga Bullets at Mumias Complex Stadium, it was K’Ogalo who had the last laugh after four goals in the second half courtesy of striker Benson Omalla, Peter Lwasa, Austin Odhiambo, and Alpha Onyango handed them their 20th league title in a dramatic end to the season.

With both Gor Mahia and Tusker having a chance to lift the title, the deciding fixtures kicked off at the same time, and it was the Brewers, who scored in their away duel ahead of K’Ogalo after Deogratious Ojok powered home a bullet header off a cross from Humphrey Mieno with only three minutes played.

The half-time whistle went with Gor Mahia still tied 0-0 against City Stars, while Tusker had taken a commanding 2-0 lead against the relegated side. At this point, Tusker were the clear favourites to lift their 14th league title.

On resumption, Gor Mahia fans suffered more heartache when City Stars took the lead with only one minute played when Samuel Kapen rounded off goalkeeper Gad Mathews to finish off a cross from Dennis Wanjala.

The goal shut down the noisy Gor Mahia fans who were urging on their team but two minutes later Benson Omalla restored parity for K’Ogalo when he capitalised on a blunder by keeper Steve Njunge to score to an empty net.

And the moment K’Ogalo fans were waiting for arrived in the 62nd minute when Peter Lwasa scored the second, turning his markers inside out in the box before letting go of a left-footed effort past Njunge and into the left corner.

In the 82nd minute, Odhiambo added the third before Alpha Onyango put the icing on the cake with the fourth from a beautifully taken left-footed strike and though Tusker grabbed two late goals via Stewart Odhiambo in the 82nd and 87th minutes respectively against Vihiga, it was not enough to stop Gor Mahia from lifting the crown.

K’Ogalo finished with 70 points, one more than Tusker, and will represent Kenya in the Caf Champions League. Meanwhile, the Brewers still have a chance to earn a slot for continental action as they will face Kakamega Homeboyz in the final of the Mozzart Bet FKF Cup on Saturday at Kasarani.
