Africa Women's Cup of Nations Kenya’s Harambee Starlets to face Cameroon in qualifiers

Kenya’s Harambee Starlets has been drawn against Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses in the first round of the qualifiers for the 2024 Africa Women Cup of Nations Qualifiers (Wafcon).

Should the Starlets win on aggregate in the two-legged qualifier, they will be up against Gabon or Botswana in the second round. The winner of the second round will get automatic qualification for the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations to be held in Morrocco.

The first round will be played between September 18 and September 26, 2023. Starlets will start away from home. The second round, should Starlets progress, will be played between November 27, and December 5, 2023.

The qualifiers will mark Starlets’ return to Caf Competitions after Kenya’s lengthy suspension by Fifa from football. Prior to the suspension, Harambee Starlets displayed an impressive performance in the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations Qualifiers. They recorded a resounding 15-1 aggregate victory over South Sudan in October 2021, paving their way to the second and final round of qualifiers against Uganda’s Crested Cranes.

Meanwhile, in the draw conducted at the Mohammed VI Complex in Rabat, Morocco, Senegal will kick off their campaign against Mozambique, South Sudan were set up with a contest against Egypt while eleven-time African champions, Nigeria were drawn against Sao Tome and Principe.

The Democratic Republic of Congo will come up against Benin, with the winner facing either Equatorial Guinea or Libya in the next round. Cape Verde were handed a tricky encounter against Liberia while Algeria will be looking at making a good return to the tournament against Uganda.

Elsewhere, Ghana will cross swords against Rwanda in what promises to be an epic duel while Togo, who are aiming for their second participation in the tournament must first overcome Djibouti. Tunisia will play Niger with the winner setting up a match against the winner between Guinea Bissau and Congo in the second round.

Morocco by virtue of being hosts, will not engage in the qualifiers while champions, South Africa along with third-place finishers, Zambia will only engage in the qualifiers during the second round.
