Nigeria Abia State Government Debunks Sacking Finidi As Enyimba Coach

The dismissal of Finidi George, head coach of Enyimba International, has been debunked by the Abia State government.

This comes after a claim that all of Enyimba’s technical staff should submit new applications for their current roles, according to a statement attributed to the club’s new chairman, Nwankwo Kanu.

Ifeanyi Ekwueme, the club’s new sporting director, spoke on behalf of Kanu in the statement made available to en.AfricaTopsports.com and gave the team’s technical staff a 48-hour deadline.

The letter titled: ‘Application for re-absorption into Enyimba management’ reads, “The management, staff and technical crew of Enyimba first and second teams are hereby instructed to re-apply for their positions with immediate effect. All applications should be submitted to the club TMS manager within 48 hours.”

In response, the Abia State government issued a second statement, this time under the signature of the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Kazie Uko, stating unequivocally that the head coach who was the former Super Eagles captain and had recently guided Enyimba to the club’s ninth Nigeria Premier League championship.

“The Abia State Government wishes to call on the general public to disregard the story making the rounds that the technical bench of Nigeria’s premier league champions, Enyimba International Football Club, Aba, has been fired,” the statement with the heading “Finidi George Still Enyimba Manager” reads.

“There is no iota of truth in that fable as no directive has been issued in that regard by either the state government or the club’s management.

“Mr. Finidi George, manager of Enyimba and Nigeria’s former international, remains in charge at the club. Likewise all other officers.” It concluded.

As his current contract expires in September, Finidi, who signed a two-year agreement with the Aba giants in 2021, is allegedly in contract negotiations with the team.

In August 2021, the former Real Betis and Ajax winger took Fatai Osho’s spot.
