Kenya Another blow for Gor Mahia as Cecafa Kagame Cup cancelled

FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia will miss out on the opportunity to feature in the 2023 edition of the Cecafa Kagame Cup after the tournament was cancelled.

According to Cecafa Executive Director Auka Gacheo, the inter-club competition which brings together top teams in the Zone and is sponsored by Rwanda President Paul Kagame, will not take place for the second successive season, because of a busy Caf/Fifa calendar.

“It is unfortunate that once again we shall not have this tournament this year,” said Gacheo, adding: “We had hoped to stage the tournament to help our teams in the region use it to prepare effectively ahead of the Caf club competitions which start in August but it will not be the case.”

The last Cecafa Kagame Cup was held in 2021 when Uganda’s Express FC beat visiting Nyasa Big Bullets FC from Malawi 1-0 in the final played in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. By virtue of winning the league, K’Ogalo were scheduled to represent Kenya, Vipers SC represent Uganda while Tanzania were supposed to send two teams – Young Africans (Yanga SC) and Simba SC.

This will be the second competition Gor Mahia will not be taking part in after they were kicked out of the Caf Champions League by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) for failure to meet club licensing regulations. This year’s Kagame Cup edition was slated for Sudan but the country has been enduring a period of insecurity due to a civil war.
