Transfers Done Deal: West Brom unveil former Sunderland striker Josh Maja

West Brom have made their second summer signing by bringing Josh Maja to the EFL Championship club following his exit from French second-tier side Bordeaux.

The 24-year-old former Sunderland, Fulham, and Stoke City striker has signed a three-year contract. Free agent Maja, who has joined four days before the start of the new season, follows last week’s loan move for Brighton winger Jeremy Sarmiento.

“Albion are delighted to confirm the permanent signing of former Bordeaux striker Josh Maja,” read part of a statement on the club’s official website, adding: “The 24-year-old, who claimed 16 goals and six assists last season, has signed a three-year contract at The Hawthorns following a successful spell in south-west France.”

London-born Maja made his professional debut for Sunderland in the Carabao Cup aged just 17, gaining experience in the Championship and League One while with the Black Cats. An impressive 15 goals from 24 league matches in the first half of the 2018/19 campaign caught the eye of then-Ligue 1 Bordeaux, who he joined a month after his 20th birthday in January 2019.

Loans at Premier League Fulham and Championship Stoke City followed, prior to a return to the starting XI at the Matmut Atlantique. In August 2019, the then Nigeria national team manager Gernot Rohr said he wanted Maja to represent the West African nation and he made his international debut on September 10 in a 2-2 friendly against Ukraine, replacing Victor Osimhen in added time.
