AFCON AFCON 2023: Egypt on a mission to bring trophy back home – Vitoria

Egypt coach Rui Vitoria believes their mission in Ivory Coast is to return home with the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

The Pharaohs, who are drawn in Group B alongside Ghana, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, will kick-off their campaign against the Mambas on Sunday, the same day the Black Stars will face Cape Verde before both giants come face to face four days later in matchday two.

“We are at a stage where we must give everything to win that cup. Our goal is to win the Africa Cup of Nations,” said Vitoria, adding: “We have a mission to bring that cup back to Egypt. I believe in the players and the work we are doing. Every match is a final for us.”

On facing the Mambas, Vitoria said: “Mozambique’s national team is very good, and we must be humble. Clarity is an advantage for any champion. We know the first match is crucial for every team; we must be strong and win against Mozambique or any other team we face.

“A team that lacks organization throughout all stages of the match will find it difficult to succeed. We must control the game, and it won’t always be easy, but we will try to do that starting from tomorrow (Sunday).”

On whether Egypt are overlying too much on their captain Mohamed Salah, Vitoria said: “I don’t believe in teams that rely on individuals but in organized teams that can facilitate and enhance the qualities of the individuals they possess, and this applies to us with Mohamed Salah.”
