In contrast, Stellies lost in the semifinals of the South African FA Cup for the second consecutive year.

AmaZulu FC is expected to visit the team led by coach Steve Barker on May 8.

Masandawana broke the tie in the eleventh minute by applying pressure to the Stellies defence.

They had a strong start to the match. Khuliso Mudau, who was set up by Lucas Ribeiro Costa, gave Sundowns the lead with a powerful, low shot that beat custodian Oscarine Masuluke.

The visitors were subsequently put under pressure by Stellenbosch as they looked for the equalising goal, and in the 16th minute, Anicet Oura forced custodian Ronwen Williams into a save.

Iqraam Rayners thought he had tied the game in the 40th minute, but the goal was ruled offside, leaving Sundowns ahead 1-0 at the break.

After the break, with coach Rhulani Mokwena substituting Thembinkosi Lorch for Tashreeq Matthews, Masandawana looked for another goal.

The 74th minute saw the former Orlando Pirates star make an impact as he headed home a beautiful pass from Peter Shalulile to give Sundowns a 2-0 lead.

After Mudau was fouled in the hosts’ area, Sundowns had a chance to take the lead, but in the 80th minute, Shalulile missed the crossbar with the ensuing penalty.

Sundowns prevailed 2-1 on the day as the visitors fell asleep at the back in the 81st minute, allowing Genino Palace to score with a low effort.
