Serie A Atalanta Bounce Back To Claim Vital Victory Against Salernitana

After rallying from behind to defeat demoted Salernitana 2-1 and climb to fifth place in Serie A on Monday, Atalanta made significant progress towards playing in the Champions League.

Gianluca Scamacca, a prolific scorer, and Teun Koopmeiners each scored a goal in the second half to put Gian Piero Gasperini’s team ahead of Roma on goal differential and with a game remaining.

But before Atalanta’s Europa League quarterfinal matchup against Marseille on Thursday night—a match that ended with a 1-1 draw after the first leg in southern France last week—it wasn’t all smooth sailing.

After his team was behind following the hosts’ excellent curling opener in the eighteenth minute, Gasperini made three substitutions at the break.

Among those substitutes was Koopmeiners, who scored a spectacular goal in the 63rd minute to give Atalanta the victory after Scamacca had poked in his tenth goal in twelve games.

With five spots available to Serie A, the encounter between Atalanta and Roma on Sunday might determine which of the two teams gets into Europe’s premier club championship the following season.

Later on, Udinese will play Napoli in the hopes of winning and moving up out of the relegation zone.
