UEFA EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE El Kaabi Orchestrates Villa Exit From Europa Conference League

Olympiakos Piraeus defeated Aston Villa 2-0 at home on Thursday, taking a 6-2 aggregate lead to reach the final of the Europa Conference League on Thursday night.

Ayoub El Kaabi scored twice for the Greek team, who easily advanced to a Europa Conference League final where they will play against Fiorentina.

Villa got off to a strong start, but in the tenth minute, Daniel Podence’s pass down the line found fullback Quini, who found El Kaabi at the far post for an easy finish.

El Kaabi had scored three goals in the first leg.

The visitors had the majority of the possession in the first half.

In stoppage time, winger Leon Bailey came the closest to tying the score with a fierce shot that Konstantinos Tzolakis parried away for a corner.

The second half saw more of the same as Olympiakos’ defenders shut down Unai Emery’s team as Villa maintained possession dominance but found it difficult to generate opportunities.

El Kaabi, who required only the faintest smell of an opportunity against the English team to put the ball in the net, was able to open up the defenders whereas Villa was unable to do so.

In the 79th minute, he scored again, this time by swerving in from the right onto a long ball from Tzolakis and finishing for his fifth goal in the two-leg match.

A VAR review overturned the first call that had disallowed the goal for offside.

Villa’s chances of winning were entirely dashed by that, and even though Ollie Watkins nearly scored with a late looping header that was turned over the bar for a corner, it had little effect on the celebratory mood that had taken hold in the bleachers.

The final whistle shortly after announced that Olympiakos had advanced to the European final for the first time in their 99-year history.

The matchup with Fiorentina, the runners-up from the previous season, is scheduled for May 29 at the home of Greek rivals AEK Athens.
