Nigeria Women Football League NWFL Super Six: Quest For The Crown Goes Down To Last Day

The 2023/2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six has gotten increasingly exciting as teams battle for the crown, with different results on Matchday Four setting up a tense final matchday on Sunday.

Following the results of Matchday Four on Friday at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State’s capital, three clubs remain in contention for the title: Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, and Bayelsa Queens.

Bayelsa Queens’ title hopes were dashed after a goalless draw with Heartland Queens, which mirrored their previous two league games from the 2022/2023 season.

Mercy Omokwo nearly scored in the 23rd minute, but it was called back due to offside.

Three minutes later, Heartland’s Uchenna Chukwu made a point-blank save to deny Sakirat.

Chukwu also denied Zainab Olopade’s free kick attempt in the 43rd minute.

For the third time in a row, neither team was able to break the deadlock, resulting in a draw.

As a result, the final Matchday will be critical, with Bayelsa Queens facing Edo Queens in a potentially decisive winner-take-all clash, depending on the outcome of Rivers Angels’ encounter versus Heartland Queens.

Rivers Angels defeated Confluence Queens 2-0, with to a second-half brace from Chiamaka Okwuchukwu.

It was their second Super Six triumph.

Around the 30-minute mark of the first half, Confluence Queens survived a goal-mouth scramble by Ogbonda Whyte’s team.

Sylvia Echefu, Lokoja’s goalkeeper, put up a great performance, denying Rivers’ attempts until the 68th minute, when Rivers broke the tie with a rebound.

Okwuchukwu then doubled the lead in the 89th minute, giving Rivers a two-goal advantage heading into their last encounter against Heartland Queens.

The third encounter between the Edo Queens and the Nasarawa Amazons was a close battle.

Moses Aduku’s team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory, going to the top of the table with nine points.

Edo Queens captain Suliat Abideen’s brilliant performance in the 81st minute earned the victory for the Benin Arsenals, leaving the league title up for grabs among the top three teams.

Edo Queens presently lead with nine points, closely followed by Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens, both with eight.

Confluence Queens (3 points), Heartland Queens (2 points), and Nasarawa Amazons (2 points) round out the standings.

On Sunday, a win for Edo Queens vs Bayelsa Queens would guarantee Aduku’s second Nigerian league title with a different team.

In contrast, a win for Bayelsa Queens could secure the title, depending on the outcome of Rivers Angels’ match versus Heartland Queens, which could be decided by goals scored and goal differentials.
