Serie A Napoli Misses Out Of European Competition Next Season

Napoli’s faint hopes of competing in European events next season were dashed as they were held to a 0-0 home draw by Lecce in their final Serie A game of the season on Sunday.

Last season’s winners Napoli finished 10th with 53 points, level with ninth-placed Torino, who were defeated 3-0 at Atalanta in a simultaneous kick off on Sunday.

Despite their loss, Torino can still qualify for the Europa Conference League playoffs if eighth-placed Fiorentina, who have a game in hand, wins the competition.

Fiorentina will meet Olympiacos of Greece for the title on Wednesday.

Napoli needed a win to keep their European chances alive, but despite 24 shots, five of which were on goal, they finished their disastrous season winless in their last seven matches.

Substitute Cyril Ngonge had an excellent chance to put Napoli ahead shortly after the break, but his drive from the edge of the box was saved by Lecce custodian Wladimiro Falcone.

Jens Cajuste hit the far post with a low strike just before Ngonge hit the crossbar in the 64th minute.

Atalanta, the Europa League winners, secured at least fourth place after Gianluca Scamacca, Ademola Lookman, and Mario Pasalic all scored in a 3-0 victory over Torino.

They are currently fourth with 69 points, but if they beat Fiorentina in their final game next Sunday, they will be able to pass third-placed Juventus, who have 71 points.
