Egypt’s first-choice goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Following Cape Verde’s equaliser and with just a few seconds left on the clock, Mohamed El-Shenawy had to be replaced by Mohamed Abougabal after falling awkwardly on his shoulder.
A statement from the EFA read: “The X-rays confirmed the injury of Mohamed El-Shenawy, with a dislocated shoulder. As a result, he will be absent from the remaining matches of the Africa Cup of Nations.
“There has been coordination between the medical staff of the Egyptian national team and their counterparts at Al Ahly regarding all the treatment procedures for the player.
“We wish our goalkeeper, Mohamed El-Shenawy, a speedy recovery.”
The keeper’s injury comes at a time when Egypt coach Rui Vitoria is coming to terms with another injury sustained by captain Mohamed Salah, who has been released from camp to continue with treatment with his club Liverpool and may miss the tournament.
