Tanzania Premier League Nabi will stay at Yanga SC despite offers – Hersi Said

Newly crowned Tanzania Mainland Premier League champions Young Africans (Yanga SC) have confirmed offers for their head coach Nasreddine Nabi but are not ready to let him go.

Nabi, who was named Yanga coach in 2021, successfully helped the Jangwani-based giants to lift their second straight league title after defeating Dodoma Jiji 4-2 at Azam Complex on Saturday.

Yanga achieved the title with two matches to spare and speaking after the game, club President Eng. Hersi Said admitted several top clubs from Africa and Europe had already reached out for the services of the 58-year-old Tunisian coach but they are not ready to discuss the same.

“We still have several things we want to achieve together this season and have a mission to complete with coach Nasreddine [Nabi] and so he will not be leaving the club any time soon even for any amount,” said Hersi Said.

“It is true we have several offers on the table from top clubs wanting to sign him [Nabi] but Yanga fans should not be worried. As Yanga bosses we are not ready to see any coach leave our current technical bench, we are building Yanga and we want the togetherness to prevail.

“Nabi will continue to be with us, we have already won the league title with two matches to spare, we are still in the domestic cup competition and also the Caf Confederation Cup, and we know we have a chance to win more titles, so we don’t have time to listen to any offers.”

On whether Yanga will strengthen for next season, Hersi Said said: “It is still early to talk about new signings, first we want to know which players the coach wants to stay and then we see what happens next season.

“I don’t think we will make many signings because we have a good squad that will be ready to continue and compete from where we will have left this season.”

Yanga are topping the 16-team table with 74 points from 28 matches, seven more than rivals Simba SC, who have played the same number of matches.

The Timu ya Mwananchi are in the semi-finals of the Caf Confederation and will face Marumo Gallants of South Africa in the return leg at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday. Yanga won the first leg at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium 2-0 courtesy of goals from Stephane Aziz and Bernard Morrison.
