Tanzania Premier League Yanga crowned Tanzania Premier League champions with two matches to spare

Young African (Yanga SC) secured their second straight Tanzanian Mainland Premier League title after defeating Dodoma Jiji 4-2 in a closely fought contest at Azam Complex on Saturday.

However, the Timu ya Wananchi were forced to sweat before bagging the title as they had to come from a goal down despite having taken the lead to secure the vital win which earned them their 29th league title in history.

Yanga took a deserved lead in the 38th minute through Zambia forward Kennedy Musonda but the hosts levelled matters when Salim Hoza beat Yanga’s offside trap to make it 1-1 in the 60th minute.

Yanga launched the comeback when Mudathir Yahya restored parity in the 73rd minute and Farid Musa put them 3-2 up in the 87th minute. In the stoppages, Yahya ensured the title was remaining in Jangwani after he nodded home a cross from Musa.

Yanga have now retained the title they won last season with two matches to spare. They are currently sitting top of the 16-team table with 74 points from 28 matches, seven more than their rivals Simba SC, who have played the same number of matches.

Yanga’s next two matches in the league will see them come up against Mbeya City and Tanzania Prisons while Simba will face Polisi Tanzania and Coastal Union.

Having secured the title, Yanga will shift their focus to the Caf Confederation Cup where they are scheduled to face South Africa’s Marumo Gallants in the return leg of their semi-final fixture at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday, May 17.

Yanga will head into the fixture with a 2-0 advantage secured from the first leg played at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on May 10. They scored their goals in the second half courtesy of Stephane Aziz and Ghana international Bernard Morrison.
