AFCON Noe Uwimana: No regrets to represent Rwanda over Tunisia

Philadelphia Union youngster Noe Uwimana says he is very excited to have picked Rwanda ahead of Tunisia in his international career.

Born in the United States to a Rwandan father and a Tunisian mother, Uwimana was eligible to feature for all three countries, but he instead settled for Rwanda and his now part of the squad preparing for their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Mozambique on June 18.

“I have always had dreams of playing for the Rwanda national team, I am so excited to represent my Dad’s side, he loves his country and I am very glad to represent Rwanda,” Uwimana told the media during Tuesday’s training as quoted by Times Sport.

“I also have Tunisian roots through my mother but I have been given the opportunity here and I am happy to take it. Everyone has been good to me and they have welcomed me.”

The 18-year-old further discussed his position by saying: “I am a versatile player as I can operate on the left wing, right-wing, right back, and left back.”

Meanwhile, Al Wahda striker Patrick Mutsinzi has admitted to being surprised by the call to feature for Rwanda against the OS Mambas.

“The call-up was a total surprise for me,” Mutsinzi said. “The first time I learned about the call-up…I was in the room in Dubai, I was very happy because it is everyone’s dream to play for the national team and it was very exciting for me.”

He added: “This is another landmark in my life. It is always thrilling to represent my country, and nothing can beat that.”

Rwanda will face Mozambique in the Group L fixture at Huye Stadium.
