Premier League Chelsea project good for me to develop – Christopher Nkunku

Chelsea’s new signing Christopher Nkunku has revealed why he made the decision to sign for the Premier League outfit from RB Leipzig.

The 25-year-old, who has been capped 10 times by France, agreed a six-year contract, which will begin on July 1. Speaking in an exclusive interview with the club’s official website, Nkunku said: “I think the project was good for me, good for me to develop myself as a player and as a man also, this is a good city, and for sure I want to improve in football, and I want to win trophies and improve myself also.

“So I think this is a good project for me at this moment, this is a good project, for sure. We can say that I am a hard worker. I will give everything for the club, the fans and to help the team bring some trophies.”

On his decision to change roles from a midfielder to a forward, he said: “It never surprised me because it is just about my motivation. I want to improve, to progress every day, so wherever they tell me to play, I play, and I wanted to improve in every position. So that’s the way I go about everything and why I was able to score goals after changing.

“I was not surprised because I know my qualities, I know what I am capable to do, so I’m not surprised.”

Nkunku is a graduate of the famed French national football academy at Clairefontaine and started his professional career at Paris Saint-Germain. He made 78 first-team appearances and was involved in three Ligue 1 title wins and two Coupe de France triumphs before departing for RB Leipzig in the summer of 2019.

It is in Germany that Nkunku built his reputation as one of the finest forwards in European football. He scored 35 goals in all competitions during the 2021-22 campaign and was named Bundesliga Player of the Season and German PFA Player of the Season.
