UEFA EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE Ghana goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott picks injury on Hibernian debut

Ghanaian goalkeeper Joseph Wollacott’s suffered an injury blow on his Hibernian debut during their Europa Conference League fixture against Inter Club d’Escaldes of Andorra on Thursday night.

Just ahead of the kick-off of the fixture, there was a further switch in Hibernian’s line-up after goalkeeper David Marshall picked up a hamstring injury during the warm-up and was replaced by Wollacott.

However, the Ghana international lasted for only 16 minutes after he picked a hamstring injury just like Marshall, and this forced Hibernian manager Lee Johnson to bring in Max Boruc, who was not part of the original matchday squad and had only played for the Development Squad the night before.

Despite the injury to the Black Star, the Hibees progressed through to the next round of the UEFA Conference League Qualifiers with an emphatic 6-1 victory over Inter Club d’Escaldes. After a disappointing 2-1 defeat in the first leg in Andorra, the Hibees turned the tie around winning 6-1 at Easter Road (7-3 aggregate) to progress through to the third Qualifying Round of the competition.

While Johnson did not give any details of Wollacott’s injury, he admitted being impressed with the depth of his squad after the game. He said as quoted by the club’s official website: “We had a very strong bench tonight which allowed us to rest three or four players once the game was won. The games will come thick and fast at the moment so it is really important we trust the whole squad and we get the whole squad minutes.”

Wollacott, formerly of Swindon Town, joined Hibernian this summer on a three-year deal from Charlton Athletic.
