CAF CONFEDERATION CUP CAFCC: Bendel Insurance Stun ASO Chlef To Face Berkane

After an aggregate tie of 1-1, Nigeria’s Bendel Insurance defeated Algeria’s ASO Chlef on penalties to advance to the next round with a 4-3 victory.

At the Salem Mabrouki Stadium in Algeria on Saturday, the first qualifying round’s second leg ended with a score of 1-0, overturning Insurance’s victory in the first leg by the same margin.

The Algerian club started the home leg of the second leg on the attack, but they were unable to break through until they were given a penalty on minute 31.

However, Bendel Insurance custodian Amas Obasogie turned aside the penalty kick.

Ten minutes later, the home team finally took the lead with a flicked goal off of a low deflected cross.

Insurance battled with their hosts head-to-head in the second half and only lost due to poor finishing late in the game that forced penalties.

While Paul Obata missed Insurance’s third kick by hitting the crossbar, Obasogie saved ASO Chief’s fourth kick since the fifth taker could only hit the crossbar, which elicited a raucous celebration from the whole Bendel insurance contingent on their host’s pitch.

The victory is the sixth first-round triumph for Benin Arsenal, who have never lost a match in the opening round of a continental competition.

For a spot in the lucrative group round of the competition, the Monday Odigie-led team will play against RS Berkane of Morocco in the following round.

On Sunday, the TotalEnergies Confederation Cup continues to take shape as clubs make their way through the preliminary qualifying rounds in search of a group stage spot.
