Dstv Premiership Kaizer Chiefs snap winless streak to down Sekhukhune United

Struggling Kaizer Chiefs snapped a four-match winless streak after coming from behind to beat Sekhukhune United 2-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Amakhosi fell behind on the stroke of halftime when Elias Mokwana netted for the visitors but goals in the second half by Edson Castillo and Edmilson Dove ensured the Soweto giants took maximum points.

Chiefs were desperate to turn their recent form around that has seen them draw and lose in two league matches while they were also knocked out of the MTN8 by Mamelodi Sundowns over two legs in the semi-final. It seemed like their problems would just be compounded and the pressure increase on head coach Molefi Ntseki when Sekhukhune took the lead.

Brandon Truter’s team found it way too easy to play through the Chiefs defence and Mokwana found himself in acres of space in the box and neatly tucked home a left-footed finish past Brandon Peterson. Amakhosi however up their tempo after the interval and pressed higher up on the pitch and the move paid off on the hour mark when they won the ball close to the visitors’ goal and Castillo buried a close-range header to equalise.

Ntseki then introduced new signing Sibongiseni Mthethwa from the bench, replacing Castillo in the middle of the park, and Chiefs seemed to get more control in the encounter. They then found what proved to be the winner 14 minutes from full-time when Reeve Frosler sent in a cross from the right and Dove was on hand to head home.

It was Amakhosi’s third victory in the eight league matches this season and moves them up to fifth in the standings while Sekhukhune sits in seventh place after their third defeat in seven games.
