Botola Pro Wydad Casablanca coach Faouzi Benzarti resigns after defeat to JS Soualem

Wydad Casablanca head coach Faouzi Benzarti has handed in his resignation following a 3-1 loss to JS Soualem in the 18th round of Botola Pro 1.

The defeat set Wydad’s record to two wins in their last ten games, with the team suffering five defeats, including a 2-0 home loss to arch-rivals Raja Casablanca.

The veteran Tunisian coach clarified in the post-match press conference that he had hoped for things to unfold in a better manner; however, conceding goals in this manner is unacceptable.

“I don’t blame any player, I have given all the players my trust and I will submit my resignation. I tried to rectify the situation, but unfortunately, I did not succeed,” he said.

“It’s unusual and unreasonable for us to concede two goals in the same way as the previous match. Then, concede three goals in the same way today. I cannot accept this in any way.”

He added: “Wydad is going through a difficult period. I have tried tirelessly to rectify many issues. We have worked hard and exerted great efforts, yet the situation has not changed.

“Therefore, I prefer to resign from my duties and leave the opportunity for another coach. I thank the players, the administrative and technical staff with me. Sometimes you do good things for a beautiful cause, but you may not succeed, and that’s what happened.”

Wydad currently occupies the fifth position in Botola Pro 1 standings with 28 points, trailing league leaders Raja Casablanca and AS FAR by 12 points.
