Tuesday’s thrilling first leg of the Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich ended in a 2-2 draw thanks to two goals from Vinicius Jr. of Real Madrid, including a late penalty that opened up the tie.

After 24 minutes, the Brazilian gave Real Madrid the lead.

This is the third season in a row that he has scored in the semifinals.

Before Vinicius’ penalty shoot, Bayern had turned the tide of the match with two goals in four minutes early in the second half, courtesy of goals from Leroy Sane and Harry Kane.

In front of each other for a record-tying seventh encounter at this round in the competition, Bayern had a fast start, putting up six shots on goal by the fifteenth minute, with Sane and Kane coming close.

But Real needed just one chance to score, shocking the home crowd against the flow of play as Vinicius Jr chased down a through ball from Kroos that ripped open the Bayern defence and beat custodian Manuel Neuer.

In the 51st, Kroos came close to adding another, but Neuer palmed his curled shot wide.

Instead, it was Bayern who equalised two minutes later thanks to a solo effort and a Sane shot that escaped goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

After Lucas Vazquez pulled down Jamal Musiala in the area and Kane sent Lunin the wrong way from the spot to put the home team ahead, their comeback was complete in the 57th.

After Rodrygo was taken down by a clumsy challenge from Kim Min-jae, Real Madrid, seeking their 15th European Cup, tied the score in the 83rd minute with a penalty from Vinicius.

This set up an exciting return leg in Madrid the following week.

The victors will play either Paris St. Germain or Borussia Dortmund, who square off in Wednesday’s second semifinal.
