Bundesliga Union Berlin Part Ways With Bjelica After Winless Streak

After being without a win for a while and sitting just one point above the relegation zone, Union Berlin announced on Monday that they had fired manager Nenad Bjelica, a Croatian, and appointed Marco Grote as their interim boss.

In November of last year, when Union was struggling to finish in 17th place, Bjelica was brought on as Urs Fischer’s substitute.

With two games left, they trail in 15th place after losing four of their last five games.

In November, the 51-year-old Grote, who had previously served as the club’s Under-19s youth coach, temporarily assumed leadership of Union.

“I’m looking forward to the task and am convinced that we’ll manage to avoid relegation.

I know our team well and know that if we join forces we are capable of picking up the necessary points,” Grote said in a statement.

Marie-Louise Eta, the first female coach at a Bundesliga club, will continue in her role as assistant coach, according to Union.

Union’s next match is against fellow relegation-threatened team Koln on Saturday.

On May 18, they play their final home game against seventh-place Freiburg to wrap off the campaign.
