Top News Maradona 1986 Golden Ball To Be auctioned In France

The Aguttes auction house announced on Tuesday that Diego Maradona’s Golden Ball trophy, which he received for being named the best player in the 1986 World Cup, will go up for auction in France in June.

The auction house anticipates that this, the first Golden Ball to be put up for auction, will bring in millions of dollars on June 6th, while the exact value is yet unknown.

Maradona, who passed away in 2020, was the winner of the prize after captaining his nation and playing every minute in the World Cup finals in Mexico, where he scored five goals for Argentina.

Maradona’s two goals against England in the quarterfinals of that tournament are most likely the ones most people remember.

With his fist raised, Maradona beat England’s goalie Peter Shilton to score the game’s opening goal, which he later referred to as being scored by the “Hand of God”.

The second was voted the “Goal of the Century” after he dribbled past five English outfield players in an amazing mazy slalom run from his own half.

Both the ball from the game and the jersey he wore that day have already been up for auction.

Following his performance against England, Maradona scored the two goals that helped Argentina eliminate Belgium in the semifinals and win a dramatic match against West Germany, 3-2.

The Golden Ball award was first given out during the 1982 World Cup.

Past winners of the prize include Paolo Rossi of Italy, Ronaldo and Romario of Brazil, and Zinedine Zidane of France.

The only player to win the trophy twice is the legendary Lionel Messi of Argentina.

Maradona’s trophy had vanished and then turned up again in an auction room among a few trophy lots.

It was recently given to Aguttes, who verified that it is, in fact, Maradona’s Adidas Golden Ball trophy after conducting an inquiry into its origins.
