UEFA EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE Fiorentina Secures Back-To-Back Europa Conference League Final

Lucas Beltran converted a late penalty to win the match 4-3 on aggregate and guarantee back-to-back trips to the Europa Conference League final after Fiorentina’s 1-1 second-leg draw against Club Brugge on Wednesday.

The Belgian team Brugge’s Hans Vanaken opened the score early to draw the match, despite the Italians holding a 3-2 lead after the first leg in Florence.

But, Fiorentina appeared to have the better chance of scoring.

After Christian Kouame twice missed the goal frame, they were given a penalty kick after Brandon Mechele’s high boot struck M’Bala Nzola in the face. With five minutes left, Beltran tied the game.

Fiorentina, which was defeated by West Ham United in the Conference League championship game the previous year, will now play the victor of Olympiakos vs. Aston Villa, the second semifinal match, in Athens on Thursday.

After the first leg, the Greek team leads 4–2. Following Denis Odoi’s tardy second yellow card, Brugge ended with ten men.

They had hoped to make it to their first European final in forty-six years, but they lost both matches to opponents who were more focused on attacking.

Vanaken’s deft in-swinging cross from the left beat everyone, including Maxim De Cuyper, his teammate, and Pietro Terracciano, the custodian for Fiorentina, to equal the score on aggregate.

Before the unfortunate Ivorian slammed the goal frame again, this time with a header, Kouame’s tremendous effort from the edge of the box touched the underside of the crossbar and stayed out by inches.

Mechele’s mistake gave Fiorentina the opportunity to score the goal they deserved, and Beltran delivered the final blow to the hosts.
