Top News Union Saint-Gilloise Win Belgian Cup After 110 Years Of Waiting

After 110 years, Union Saint-Gilloise finally won the Belgian Cup on Thursday in the final in Brussels thanks to a goal from Koki Machida against the defending champion Royal Antwerp.

In the final minute of the first half, Japan international Machida scored a flick from a corner to give Union their first trophy since 1914.

At the beginning of the second half, the game was momentarily stopped as the referee threatened to remove the players from the field if the Antwerp supporters continued to light flares, as announced over the stadium speakers.

Jurgen Ekkelenkamp may have had an equaliser in the final ten minutes when he gained possession in the opposition area, but some frantic defending prevented his shot from crossing the goal line.

Antwerp won both the league and the cup the previous season.

During a counterattack in stoppage time of the second half, Mohamed Amoura had the opportunity to score a second goal for Union, but he missed the mark with just the custodian to beat.

After spending decades in the basement, Union has turned things around over the past three seasons.

Having won the final of their 11 league titles in 1935, they are also vying for league triumph this season.
