Nigerian Players abroad Osimhen On Target As Napoli Edges Closer To Winning Scudetto

With their 3-0 victory over relegation-threatened Cremonese on Sunday, Napoli resumed their ascent towards their first Serie A championship in more than three decades and, importantly, increased their advantage over the competition to 16 points.

With each passing week, a 33-year wait for the league championship appears to be drawing to a close. At the Stadio Maradona, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen once again served as the team’s pivotal players.

On his 22nd birthday, wing wizard Kvaratskhelia gave Napoli the lead with a lovely individual goal in the 22nd minute. Osimhen’s league-high 17th goal of the season came midway through the second half, and Eljif Elmas’ goal came 11 minutes from time.

Napoli will be at least 13 points ahead of Inter Milan come Tuesday morning thanks to their sixth consecutive league victory, with their closest rivals traveling to crisis club Sampdoria for the round’s last game on Monday night.

Meanwhile, despite another committed effort under recently recruited coach Davide Ballardini, Cremonese are yet to win in their first Serie A season since 1996 and appear destined to drop back down.

The away team, who eliminated Napoli from the Italian Cup on the same field last month, made a strong opening, but the game was over as soon as Kvaratskhelia twisted into the area and scored his ninth league goal of his first Serie A season.

Osimhen wasn’t in his normal fiery form, but in the 65th minute, after a corner, Kim Min-Jae nodded the ball over to the Nigerian striker, who was in the correct place to tap in from nearly on the goal line.

Elmas, a substitute, kept Napoli’s record of lost points intact with his unbelievable sixth goal of the year past Marco Carnesecchi after exchanging passes with Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
