FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP FIFAWWC: South Korea Teen, Phair Makes History As Youngest Player

As a substitute for South Korea against Colombia on Tuesday, Casey Phair, who was 16 years and 26 days old, made history by becoming the youngest player to appear in a Women’s World Cup match.

The striker, who was born in the United States and was selected for the national team as a young player, has now made her South Korean debut.

She replaced Ifeanyi Chiejine of Nigeria, who had participated in the 1999 World Cup at the age of 16 years and 34 days, when she entered the game in Sydney in the 78th minute.

Phair is the first player of mixed ancestry to be selected for the senior South Korean women’s football team.

She was born to an American father and a Korean mother.

Colin Bell, the English coach for South Korea, said he was keen to defend the teen in a statement on the eve of the Colombia game.

“So now she’s in the squad, then we just take it day by day, so I don’t really want to hype up a young player too much before she’s even played,” he said.

“That’s why I’ve been safeguarding her from the media.”

Unfortunately, her inclusion could not stop South Korea from a 2-0 loss to Colombia.
