Real Madrid, the most successful team in the competition with five titles, defeated them in the decisive game.

There are currently no former holders of this year’s edition.

The only past winners still eligible to compete for the last spot are Internacional of Brazil.

The Copa Libertadores championship final on November 4 will determine CONMEBOL’s participant, with Boca Juniors of Argentina and Palmeiras, Fluminense, and Internacional of Brazil competing.

As was announced in February, the first Club World Cup will be hosted in Saudi Arabia from December 12–22.

The competition will be place in two locations in the city of Jeddah.

The current structure, a yearly competition with seven teams, will end with the 2023 competition before being expanded to a 32-team event in the United States in 2025.
