Nigeria’s men’s amputee football team, the Special Eagles, advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Amputee AFCON in Egypt after defeating Burundi 11-0 in their final group game on Wednesday.

Striker Michael Jewell was the standout of the win, netting seven goals, while Turkey-based Mohammad Grima scored a hat-trick and Olaa Buhachi added another goal to make light work of the newcomers.

The massive win handily secured the Special Eagles’ top spot in Group A, courtesy to a goal difference advantage over hosts Egypt.

The Egyptians defeated Burundi 10-2 on Tuesday after a goalless draw against Nigeria in the first round last Saturday.

Nigeria will meet the second-placed team from Group B in the quarter-finals on Thursday night, with Liberia appearing likely to finish below Morocco in that group, depending on the outcome of their match, which kicks off late on Wednesday (today).

Seven of the countries that make it to the final eight will compete in the 2026 Amputee World Cup in Morocco.

Nigeria’s finest Nations Cup performance was a second-place finish at the 2019 tournament in Angola, when they lost 2-0 to the hosts in the final.
