Africa South Africa : Pistorius family parted ways with PR agency

The public relations company representing murder accused Oscar Pistorius and his family have parted ways.

The company, Vuma Reputation Management, was quick however to dismiss suggestions the decision had something to do with his father’s recent media comments in which he blamed the ANC not for doing enough to protect whites.

“Absolutely not, it has nothing to do with the comments. We are in the process of handing over everything to the family as our contract with them was only for two weeks,” said spokesperson Lunice Johnston.

A day after Pistorius shot dead his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in Pretoria on February 14, her company started handling media queries.

This week, the athlete’s father, Henk, was quoted in foreign media saying the reason his family owned 56 guns was because the ANC didn’t protect white people from crime.

His comments were widely condemned by the ANC and other political parties.

Vuma distanced themselves from the comments.

Johnston said although the family was still in mourning and Pistorius was still battling to cope with what had happened, her company believed the family can now handle the media themselves.

“Our relationship with the family is still good and we will still keep in contact with them.”

Pistorius’ uncle Arnold, however, said in a statement the family would no longer be communicating with the media.
