African players abroad Semenyo’s eighth of the season propels Bournemouth past Wolves

Ghana international Antoine Semenyo scored his eighth Premier League goal of the season to send AFC Bournemouth into the top half of the Premier League table with a 1-0 win at Molineux.

The Cherries overcame a Milos Kerkez red card and two disallowed Wolves goals in a tense ending to the game in the Midlands, but the desire and work rate of the team saw them through for three precious points.

Andoni Iraola made three changes with the short turnaround from Sunday’s game at Aston Villa. Mark Travers started in goal over Neto for his first Premier League appearance of the season, while Antoine Semenyo and Alex Scott were also drafted in for Lloyd Kelly and Dango Ouattara.

Semenyo, Solanke, and Kluivert each got shots away but were all blocked or diverted away from goal. Gary O’Neil’s side had their first real chance on 12 minutes, when Travers showed no ring rust to dive at full-stretch to turn Pablo Sarabia’s long-range strike behind for a corner.

The Cherries responded swiftly, resuming their early dominance. Solanke fired a shot straight at José Sá after a neat dribble, before Kerkez and Kluivert were denied superbly by the keeper.

Wolves started to get into the game themselves shortly after the 30-minute mark, creating a couple of chances of their own but were largely reduced to long-range efforts. Iraola’s side were never too far away, though, and opened the scoring moments later.

Kerkez and Kluivert combined well down the left and when the Hungarian’s pull-back wasn’t cleared by Max Kilman, Semenyo pounced from close range to slot home.

The rest of the first half played out without too much action. The only real drama came when Rayan Ait-Nouri was booked for taking a swipe at Illia Zabarnyi who had shepherded the ball out of play for a goal kick.

O’Neil brought Matt Doherty on at the interval and the right-back was active immediately, combining with Sarabia to work the ball into the box and it was only thanks to a cool Kerkez touch that prevented the Irishman from getting a shot away.
