African players abroad Lookman scores, lays assist as Atalanta book Cup final against Juventus

Nigeria international Ademola Lookman was on target in another memorable night at the Gewiss Stadium: a 4-1 victory over Fiorentina in the second leg of the 2023-2024 Coppa Italia Frecciarossa semi-final saw the Nerazzurri overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg and book a place in the final against Juventus.

Although the visitors threatened early on through Nico Gonzalez and Belotti – but Carnesecchi was alert to deny them – it was the Nerazzurri who broke the deadlock when Scamacca’s through ball sent Koopmeiners through on goal and the Dutchman fired into the bottom corner to put Atalanta ahead on eight minutes.

In the 14th minute, Scamacca thought he had doubled the lead with a superb strike, only to have his goal disallowed via VAR for a foul on Beltran by Koopmeiners in the build-up.

The Nerazzurri continued to pile on the pressure, with Koopmeiners poking the gloves of Terracciano on 24 minutes. On 35 minutes, De Ketelaere burst into the box, but his angled left-footed shot flew just wide of the post. Ruggeri also tried his luck, but his 41st-minute right-foot effort went wide.

The second half opened up with Zappacosta’s lovely cross for Ruggeri, who nodded just wide of the post. Fiorentina went down to ten men in the 53rd minute when Milenkovic was shown a straight red card for bringing down Scamacca, who was through on goal.

The visitors drew level on 68 minutes through Martinez Quarta from a free-kick, but Atalanta were not ready to give in and Scamacca restored their lead with a spectacular goal on 75 minutes, assisted by De Ketelaere. And the pressure paid off in the 95th minute when Scamacca went on the counter and squared for Lookman, who fired home an angled shot to make it 3-1 and book a place in the final.

Pasalic made it 4-1 in the 98th minute when he was sent through by Lookman and dinked the ball past Terracciano. It was time for Atalanta to celebrate: we will face Juventus in the final.
