Africa Soccer Nigeria : Kadiri Ikhana urges NFF to hire a local coach for Super Falcons

Kadiri Ikhana,Enyimba

Super Falcons have no more coach since the departure of Thomas Dennerby after 2019 World Cup . To make a good choice for the next Boss of Nigerian national team , Ikhana gives some tracks to NFF .

During an interview with Complete sports , former Super Eagles’ right-back (1978-1982) ; evokes the current situation of Super Falcons’ team .

Ikhana trained Nigerian women team for a short time in 2012 before he resigned . Now managing Eyimba , Ikhana said Nigeria is in no need of foreign technician for women .

“We don’t need a foreigner of whatever colour to handle our women national teams. It will amount to waste of scarce resources and counter productive. We have coaches who are very good in handling women teams in the country” he said .

To sustain his idea , Ikhana uses the example of Thomas Dennerby . The way Sweden coach suffered before winning the 13th AFCON for Nigeria . He also recalled that Super Falcons won eight times AFCON being trained by a local coach .

“Our team rose to dominate women football in Africa with local coaches delivering eight of the nine times we won the AFCON. The only time a foreign manager [Swede, Thomas Dennerby] won it was the last edition in Ghana and we barely managed to win it via penalty shootout” Ikhana said .

For him NFF has just to trust a local coach . Encourage him and make him sign a long-term contract .

“We have several successful men and women coaches in our domestic league and ex-players in diaspora who can do the job with less pay package. We need to encourage our local coaches with long-term contract to deliver like the NFF did with the Super Eagles. I am sure they will deliver if given good condition and encouragement,” he added .
