Africa Soccer MALAWI: Wanderers sign Nigerian defender and Ghanaian striker

Be Forward Wanderers have signed Nigerian defender Yunusuh Sherif and Ghanaian striker Michael Tete on a free transfer, following their release by Silver Strikers.

The Blantyre-based Wanderers have signed the duo on a free transfer after Lilongwe giants, Silver exercised their right against renewing the players’ contracts.

In a statement, Wanderers said: “We would like to inform you that our team made big signings early today. Michael Tete & Yunusuh Sherif both become  Wanderers players! Welcome you guys, feel free.”

Wanderers general secretary, Victor Maunde, said they were happy to welcome the players.

“We have signed them on a one-year contract with an option for an extension upon expiry,” Maunde said.

Sherif has been a mainstay in the defence of Silver in the last two seasons whereas Tete was the second leading scorer for Silver last season, behind Khuda Muyaba who left for Polokwane City.

However, it looks like new Zambian coach Dan Kabwe did not fancy the two players.

At Wanderers, Sherrif will have the company of compatriot Babatunde Adepoju.

On the other hand, Tete is arguably the third Ghanaian to don the colours of Wanderers after defender Eric Atsiga and goalkeeper Thom Aidoo who played for the six-time league champions in the late 1990s.

The Nomads are among giant clubs in Malawi seen as potential championship contenders when the delayed league kicks off on November 28.

Wanderers finished on second place last season.

Nyasa Big Bullets, under the mentorship of Zimbabwean Callisto Pasuwa, are the defending champions and record 14-time winners.
