AFCON Afcon 2023 Qualifier: Uganda mentally prepared to face Algeria – Bayo

Uganda forward Fahad Bayo believes they know what is at stake when they take on Algeria in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture at Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon on Sunday.

The Cranes continued their preparations for the fifth Group F duel with a 1-0 friendly defeat against DR Congo at the same venue on Wednesday. Bayo, who features for MFK Vyskov in the Czech Republic National Football League, insists the East African nation is mentally ready to tackle the Algerians.

“We know what is at stake but the mentality at this stage from everyone in camp must be at its finest. It is not an easy stage as the young players will need guidance to manage such pressure moments but we are confident,” said Bayo as he talked to Fufa Media in Douala, Cameroon, where the team is camped.

Bayo who is yet to score for Uganda in the current Afcon qualification campaign further said he was well aware that strikers are judged by what they do to score and promised a good game.

“It is not easy for strikers. My job is to score goals. If I don’t score it hits me but I need to remain mentally strong. I will score goals. It is all about keeping the faith and more hard work,” said Bayo, adding: “It is a perfect match to help us try out so many things but we are also getting close to what the coach needs us to deliver against Algeria.”

Algeria are leading the group on 12 points, having won their opening four matches, while Tanzania are second on four and Uganda third on four but the former have a superior goal difference.
