Friendly Shummah will be the next Olunga for Harambee Stars – Shimanyula

Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula believes striker Moses Shummah has all the attributes to reach the level of lead star Michael Olunga after he scored his first goal for Kenya against Pakistan on Wednesday.

Playing his first game for the national team at Anjalay Coopen Stadium in Mauritius, Shummah found the back of the net in the 17th minute when he looped the ball past the advancing Pakistan goalkeeper Yousuf Butt after defender Eric Ouma’s shot had been blocked by the defenders.

The goal turned out to be the winner as Kenya registered their first victory in the Four-Nation tournament. Shummah could have doubled the lead in the 28th minute when he headed the ball past Butt again only to be rescued by a line clearance.

His superb display has caught the attention of his boss at club level Shimanyula, who said the striker has all the qualities to go head-to-head with Olunga, who captained the side during the friendly and features for Al Duhail in the Qatar Stars League.

“Shummah is a young striker but he plays like he has been in this game for many years,” said Shimanyula, adding: “Funny enough, I plucked him from remote areas in Western Kenya, he has never played even in the National Super League, and we took him from deep in the village after my scouts spotted him.

“He has gone ahead to impress for my team [Homeboyz] and became a total nightmare for defenders in the league, he has so far scored five-plus goals in the league, he scored the opener against AFC Leopards in the FKF Mozzart Bet Cup victory and he has been notching vital goals for us.

“He has the height to play at the highest level, he has the nose to score goals when in a position to, he doesn’t think twice or hesitate to score when he gets the chance, and if you look at his positioning, he is a very clever lad, he does it like he has been in this game for long, I am confident he will go far.”

Shimanyula added: “His qualities are similar to Olunga, look at his height, he is also good at aerial balls, I think he has two or three goals from headers this season, I am happy that coach Engin Firat has seen the potential in him and he can turn him into an Olunga type striker in the future.”

Shummah will get another opportunity to shine when Kenya takes on Mauritius in their final game at Anjalay Coopen Stadium on Sunday.
