Nigeria Edo State Emerges Champions of NAqF Junior Championship

The Nigeria Aquatics Federation NAqF-hosted National Junior Swimming Competition, which has ended at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Swimming Pool Complex in Asaba, with Edo State crowned as the overall winner.

In order to defeat competing states and clubs, Edo State led the medals table with eleven Gold medals, four Silver medals, and three Bronze medals.

The host state, Delta, came in second on the medals table with six Gold, nine Silver, and four Bronze medals, while Jimi Osinowo Swimming Club took third with four Gold, two Silver, and three Bronze.

The President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, Mrs. Chinenye Dafe Aliyu who declared the National Junior Swimming Competition closed, expressed pleasure with the results of the three-day competition.

In addition to other upcoming international competitions in Egypt and Israel, Mrs. Dafe claimed that the competition was planned as part of the country’s preparations for its participation in the sub-continental junior swimming competition scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana this year.

The president of the Nigerian Aquatics Federation expressed confidence in the competitors chosen from the Asaba National Junior Swimming Competition.

She expressed her gratitude to the Delta State government and Chief Tonobok Okowa, the head of the Delta State Sports Commission, for their assistance.

The Delta State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, led by its chairman, Comrade Christian Eze, received praise from the NAF President for their coverage of the event.

She also praised the quality of the officials’ work and the coaches’ behavior throughout the competition.

She urged the junior swimmers competing in the event to stick with the sport, noting that swimming, as a specialized activity, gives them the chance to pursue professional degree programs in sports-related fields like medicine.

The awarding of trophies to the Lagos-based Edo, Delta, and Osinowo Swimming Club was one of the closing ceremony’s highlights.

The National Junior Swimming Competition featured 26 swimming category events, with a total of 78 medals awarded to various individual champions.

Agnes John, a 15-year-old female athlete from Edo State, earned six gold medals, and Mabel Gillow, a 17-year-old from Bayelsa, won two gold medals, according to a breakdown of the medals table.
