AFCON Afcon 2023: Tanzania’s Amrouche irked by Niger’s vow to help Uganda

Tanzania coach Adel Amrouche has threatened to report Niger to the Confederation of African Football (Caf) after their assistant coach claimed they will assist Uganda to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast.

Taifa Stars kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the finals after defeating Niger 1-0 at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Sunday. Simon Msuva scored the only goal to lift the East African nation. However, their neighbours Uganda suffered a 2-1 defeat against Algeria to dent their hopes of earning a qualification ticket.

With Algeria already qualified as group leaders, Tanzania, and Uganda, have a good chance to join the North Africans, but after the game in Tanzania, Niger’s assistant was quoted saying they will do everything to help Uganda qualify ahead of Tanzania.

“This is not fair play, and if they do that, we will take action against them [Niger],” Amrouche said as quoted by Daily News Sports, adding: “We lost here versus Uganda, and nobody said anything…we have won against them, they are saying they will help Uganda, this is not fair.”

Tanzania will next face Algeria in their final fixture, and Amrouche said: “In football, you lose sometimes, but I do not accept losing without fighting hard…we are going to give all we have, and I need aggressiveness and determination from my players to stamp success.”

Tanzania have accumulated seven points and sits in second place in Group F, whose leaders, Algeria, extended their unbeaten run to five matches after hammering Uganda 2-1 to reach 15 points. The Cranes are in the third spot with four points, while Niger, who have missed a chance to play at the finals, remain glued at the table’s basement with two points after five engagements.
