FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP FIFAWWC: China Defeat Haiti To Solidify Round Of 16 Ticket

In Friday’s 1-0 victory over Haiti at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, Wang Shuang kept China’s Women’s World Cup campaign alive by converting a penalty. The Asian team displayed amazing resolve to earn victory despite being one player short.

On Tuesday, the Steel Roses, who have two wins and three points in Group D, take on England.

After two losses, Haiti has no points but can still advance if they defeat Denmark the same day and other outcomes go their way.

China controlled the ball from the beginning and came close to taking the lead in a dramatic way in the 16th minute when Lou Jiahui managed to direct an acrobatic effort at goal, but Haitian custodian Kerly Theus easily stopped the strike.

The tide abruptly changed, though, when Zhang Rui was dismissed for a reckless’studs up’ tackle on Sherly Jeudy in the 29th minute.

Prior the halfway, the Caribbean team took advantage of their lead by having a goal disallowed for offside, but China defended staunchly to protect themselves from constant barrages of attacks.

Early in the second half, Haiti’s substitute Melchie Dumornay forced a superb save from China’s Zhu Yu with a side-footed attempt, but it was China who eventually broke the tie after Zhang Linyan was carelessly pulled down by Ruthny Mathurin.

In the 74th minute, substitute Wang—the Asian Women’s Footballer of the Year for 2018—stepped up to take the penalty shot and give her team the lead.

In a frenzied final period, Haiti made a strong effort to tie the score but had two penalty requests rejected. China held on to win.
