Women's AFCON President Samila rewards Twiga Stars for securing WAFCON spot

Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan has awarded the senior women’s football team, Twiga Stars, a bonus of 200m/- for earning qualification into the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals.

This was revealed on Thursday in Dar es Salaam by the Minister for Culture, Arts, and Sports, Damas Ndumbaro. “Our president has announced a 200m/- bonus for these players for reaching the WAFCON finals,” said Ndumbaro as he received the team from Togo at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in the city.

He added, “We are here to welcome home these brave players as they have represented our nation well. We should remember that of all the 13 countries in CECAFA, this is the only team that has qualified; hence, it is a significant honor to our country… they deserve acknowledgment.”

To qualify for next year’s WAFCON, Twiga Stars achieved a 3-2 aggregate success over Togo. In the first leg match at Azam Complex in the city, the envoys celebrated a 3-0 triumph, while in the return leg played in Togo, they suffered a 2-0 defeat.
